Hill View Infant Academy

Believe and Achieve

At Hill View Infant Academy we believe that music is an essential and enriching element in the education and development of our children.

As part of our music curriculum, we aim to develop children’s;

  • responsiveness to a wide range of music from different cultures and styles.
  • ability to communicate feelings and ideas through music.
  • confidence in creating sounds and playing a range of instruments.
  • knowledge of the inter-related dimensions of music and basic notation.
  • understanding of how ICT can enhance musical activities.
  • opportunities to perform and experience music in a range of settings.

Mrs Boyd, our music teacher, delivers weekly music lessons throughout the school from nursery to year 2.

  • Music lessons involve active listening, singing, moving, clapping and playing along to music using a range of instruments and body percussion, including djembe drums and keyboards.
  • Lessons are taught in the music classroom and children have access to tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, keyboards and an interactive whiteboard for music ICT.
  • A varied range of listening material forms an integral part of music lessons, often inspired by school topics, seasons, everyday life and events. Selected works represent different historical periods, musical genres, ensembles, cultures, styles and traditions from around the world.
  • Singing is an integral part of everyday school life, featuring not only in music lessons but also in assemblies, productions, events and concerts. Singing supports learning throughout the whole curriculum and day to day school life. We also offer an after school choir club for those KS1 children who enjoy performing.
  • As part of our music curriculum enrichment, Mrs Boyd is always on the look out for those children who display a particular flair and talent for music. These children are given the opportunity to have small group/one-to-one sessions with Mrs Boyd to further develop their music and performance skills.
  • Extra-curricular instrumental violin lessons are optional for KS1 children. These lessons are delivered by our peripatetic music teacher Mrs Mapplebeck. Progress is monitored using the Traffic Light Award system and children have the opportunity to perform in school concerts.
  • Our music teachers Mrs Boyd and Mrs Mapplebeck are members of Sunderland Music Hub https://sunderlandmusichub.org.uk/ and Sunderland Symphony Orchestra https://www.sunderlandso.org.uk/ allowing us to engage with musical events and opportunities i.e. 'The Big Sing' & 'Peter and the Wolf'.
  • Mrs Boyd 4 Music https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-54AI8fzM_XGahj1-gQa9w/videos is a child-friendly YouTube channel which contains various videos and playlists that relate to some of the learning in music lessons.
